Keynote Speech to Thousands of Toronto (Canada) Teachers

In early December, I headed to Canada to give a talk to thousands of teachers who are all members of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto, the biggest union of teachers in the Ontario Province. I’ve been working with this union for over a year on how to build a more high participation union. Some of the references I make to the “speaker before me” are referring to Prime Minister Trudeau, who opened the annual Federation Day.

My Post Election Thoughts, Published on Alternet

The right’s obsession with union-busting is nothing new; sadly, neither is the Democratic Party’s indifference to it. For 35 years, Democrats have ignored, acquiesced in and even supported the dismantling of the American labor movement. Believing that demography is destiny, big data is strategy and framing is persuasion, the liberal elite cast off the working class. As a result, our nation and the world now face an era of unprecedented danger. Never before has a single party had as much decision-making power: control of the executive, legislative, and soon, judicial branches of government at the federal and local level. And that single party is not mainstream, it is extremist.

Book Talk Discussion at UnionsNSW (New South Wales), Hosted by the Leader of Australia’s Second Largest State’s Trade Union Movement

Mark Morey, recently elected leader of the union body in Australia’s second largest state, New South Wales, hosted me for a book launch in their regional headquarters. Australia is facing many of the same challenges we are in the USA, but their unions are where US unions were in 1995. I advised them to plot a different course!
